Charles explains it all on my behalf

'(...) They call it "9 to 5." It's never 9 to 5, there's no free lunch break at those places, in fact, at many of them in order to keep your job you don't take lunch. Then there's OVERTIME and the books never seem to get the overtime right and if you complain about that, there's another sucker to take your place.

You know my old saying, "Slavery was never abolished, it was only extended to include all the colors."

And what hurts is the steadily diminishing humanity of those fighting to hold jobs they don't want but fear the alternative worse. People simply empty out. They are bodies with fearful and obedient minds. The color leaves the eye. The voice becomes ugly. And the body. The hair. The fingernails. The shoes. Everything does.

(...) To not to have entirely wasted one's life seems to be a worthy accomplishment, if only for myself.'

excerpt from a Charles Bukowski's letter to his publisher
You can read it all here

After 8 years in a job that brought me pennies but a lot of unhappiness i gave my 60 days notice and fired myself.
I'm on a sick leave so i will never go back to that office,to that feeling.
I cried out of relief, feeling free for the first time in a long time.
There are no certainties but i'm willing to fail and to succeed.
I know that i will have to deal with  'you are crazy' expressions on so many faces but i'm ready.
Now i am ready.

  1. oh, Sara... that was brave and very good! O know what it feel to be working at a place that makes you totally unhappy - i never lasted that many years, though- so congratulations for the courage to face new stages of life, and for accepting what the future might bring. I don't think you are crazy. I'm sure you appreciate your life and want to find something better!

(btw, Bukoswski's text is quite poignant and heartbreakingly true)

On a side note, I can't wait to receive your letter! Sadly the post office in Argentina in on strike for undetermined time. So I will have to be very patient and keep waiting until those guys decide to bring me that sweet envelope!

Happy wednesday and get well soon!

  3. working at a place that does not fit makes you sick for the long term. so i can only endorse your decision! When I left my last job, I also cried of relief, I did not go because I did not like it, but for other complicated reasons. I will every remember that day standing in the middle of the city - feeling like a prisoner seeing the sunlight again.

  5. I love the self portraits here, Sara!
And now I have to tell you, I really admire you for finally taking such a huge step! I had never had a stable job in my life and some time I feel like I'd love to have that feeling of routine... but I also understand how claustrophobic and repressive that could be. I am sure you're going to feel better from now on! Well done! ♥

  6. Brave Sara! I admire that you have the courage to leave a job that's not making you the happy that you should be. Bukowski's excerpt is making me think about the emptiness that imprisons us, this inspiration may give me courage as well when I need it :)
